Context

I was deeply involved in the realization of a show that challenged and redefined the concepts of color and perception in contemporary art. The exhibition was grounded in Thomas’s exploration of color theory, screen calibration, and the language surrounding "color correction" and "white balance," particularly in the context of American cinema and the desegregation era. The works on display, including retroreflective prints and sculptures, drew inspiration from influential figures such as Ellsworth Kelly, Josef Albers, Andy Warhol, and Gordon Parks, as well as mid-century performers and cinematic history. Thomas’s pieces required viewers to actively engage and shift their perspectives, reflecting his ongoing interest in the framing of history and the multiple ways of seeing.

Responsibilities

I oversaw this project, from concept to completion, with a particular focus on managing the innovative use of retroreflective vinyl, a material central to the exhibition’s theme of shifting perception. My responsibilities included collaborating closely with Hank Willis Thomas and technical experts to develop and refine the use of this material, ensuring that it captured the desired visual and conceptual effects. This process involved meticulous research and extensive testing. Additionally, I actively coordinate with fabricators and installers to bring the artworks to life, overseeing the installation process to ensure that each piece was strategically placed and illuminated, enhancing its interactive qualities.

Outcome

The exhibition successfully engaged viewers in a dynamic and interactive experience, where the use of retroreflective materials allowed for a deeper exploration of how color and framing influence perception. My management of this complex project demonstrated my ability to blend artistic ambition with technical precision, resulting in a thought-provoking and visually compelling exhibition that resonated with audiences and critics alike.
