Press Release

Context

The installation, unveiled in June 2021, is a permanent addition to Storm King’s collection, known for its site-specific commissions by renowned artists. “Fallen Sky” is a 36-foot-diameter spherical cavity with a mirror-polished stainless steel surface, designed to blend seamlessly with Storm King’s expansive landscape.

This commission was made possible by major support from Janet Benton and David Schunter, Gagosian, Girlfriend Fund, Agnes Gund, the Hazen Polsky Foundation, the Ohnell Family Foundation, Thomas A. and Georgina T. Russo, and VIA Art Fund. Additional lead support provided by Market New York through I LOVE NY/ New York State’s Division of Tourism as part of the Regional Economic Development Council initiative.

Responsibilities

My role included overseeing the creation of detailed site models to refine the installation’s interaction with the terrain.A significant part of the project was working with UAP, a distinguished foundry known for its precision and innovation. UAP utilized augmented reality (AR) technology during the fabrication process, which allowed for enhanced visualization and accuracy when doing the assemble metal work. Additionally, I navigated the challenges of working in an outdoor environment by ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations and collaborating with various stakeholders, including landscape architects and construction teams.

Outcome

The sculpture was integrated into Storm King’s landscape, creating a striking interaction with its natural surroundings. The installation’s reflective surfaces and its capacity to capture and mirror environmental changes added a new dimension to Storm King’s collection, emphasizing themes of entropy and temporality. The project demonstrated my expertise in managing large-scale, site-specific art installations and effectively balancing artistic vision with the practicalities of outdoor work. The use of AR technology in fabrication and the successful integration of the sculpture have been recognized for their innovation and have significantly contributed to Storm King’s reputation for hosting impactful and site-specific artworks.
